e-Media Institute updated its 2010 forecasts for Pay-TV in the 19 Western European countries surveyed. The aggregate number of Pay-TV subscribers is expected to surpass the 77 million mark by the end of 2010, a 12.8% increase over the end-2009 figure of 68.5 million. Cable will enter into the lead among the four main Pay-TV platforms (IPTV, cable, satellite, and DTT), accounting for a majority (37%) of Pay-TV subscribers by year-end, due primarily to operators' continuing efforts to migrate customers from basic access-only analogue cable services (not included in the Pay-TV total) to digital TV. IPTV and DTT Pay-TV subscriptions will account for 17% and 12% of the region's base, respectively. On the downside, satellite Pay-TV services will lose ground to other platforms, ending 2010 with an estimated 34% of total Pay-TV subscribers in the region, down from 36% one year earlier.
