Digital Tv: RTD Launch new DTT channels and iTV services
Posted by: editor on Friday, January 28, 2005 - 10:35 AM

Tv Reti Televisive Digitali (RTD) officially launched two new Digital Terrestrial TV (DTT) channels and new MHP interactive TV (iTV) applications and services based on the DigiHost platform from Irish iTV software company DigiSoft.tv . RTD already provides 24-hour coverage to an area of Italy from Lombardy to Milan, Como, Varese and Pavia, with a population in excess of five million people. At the launch ceremony, Raimondo Lagostena, the President of partner companies, Profit Group and Odeon TV, ItalyÇs fourth largest broadcaster, described the rapidly changing environment of Italian TV as analogue TV broadcasting comes to an end and fifty-eight million Italian citizens make the switch to Digital TV.

Following this, Antonio Mazzara, the charismatic thirty-six year old Harvard MBA and President of RTD, introduced his new channels and the expansion of RTD as an iTV service centre for other broadcasters and the fifteen members of the Odeon syndicate. Antonio described the MHP applications RTD have developed in conjunction with DigiSoft, and will be launching using DigisoftÇs DigiHost iTV management platform. Antonio and Fintan Mc Kiernan, Senior Vice President of the EMEA region for DigiSoft.TV, demonstrated these MHP iTV applications live on air.

The applications included:

'Telegiornale' - a news application that allows viewers to read up-to-the-minute news stories and download short video clips from the evening news. This technology will be used in the future to allow the purchase and download of premium rate AV content with future applications.
Messaggi' - a TV messaging application that allows viewers to send and receive email, sms and mms messages from their Set Top Boxes. The application also alerts viewers, while they watch TV, of new message arrivals.
Viaggi' - a travel application that allows viewers to find, book and pay for flights from their TVs.
Sondaggio - a viewer voting application that can be customised by RTD to allow viewers to vote on different topics, on different shows, while providing voting results back to the viewers.
Comune - a unique application that publishes Government web information directly to MHP applications, while allowing updates to the application via secure web access to RTDÇs DigiHost iTV backend platform.

RTD was established in July 2004 as a joint venture between Teletext Italia and Profit Group of Milan, ItalyÇs fourth largest broadcaster, which consists of TLC-Telecampione, Telereporter, and the Odeon TV syndication. RTD is both a DTT broadcaster and runs an iTV outsourcing department for iTV application development and management using DigiHost. As one of the newest digital broadcasters in Italy, RTD is already one of the most important. RTD already has two channels on air and, in conjunction with an on site development team from DigiSoft, has launched many MHP applications. RTD also has future plans to launch DVB-H services.
